Yeo Hoe Koon
b. 1935 -
Born in Hainan, China, Yeo Hoe Koon relocated with his family to Singapore at a young age. Compelled by his passion for painting, Hoe Koon studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1955-57 and travelled to Paris in 1959 where he spent three years at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts—then one of the most renowned art academies in the world. Before returning from Paris, he held his first solo exhibition in the city at Gallery Horizon.
Never one satisfied with resting on his laurels, Hoe Koon left again in 1965 for a three-year art study tour around Europe where he continued to immerse in some of the world's most flourished art scenes. Upon returning to Singapore, he began a career as an art teacher while pressing on with his practice.
Hoe Koon specialises in oil, acrylic and Chinese ink painting. His abstract and semi-abstract compositions of landscape and still life subject matters captivate with dynamic brushwork and adroit palette knife sculpting, drawing the viewer into a melodious journey of colours and emotions. To date, Hoe Koon has held over 30 solo exhibitions and participated in over 80 group exhibitions, both locally and abroad. His work is in the collections of various private, corporate and institutional organisations, including UOB Bank, DBS Bank, Hyatt Hotel, Housing Development Board, Singapore, Singapore Art Museum, National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, and Yantai Art Academy, China.
